The Garner PD-5 is listed with the NSA as qualified equipment to destroy hard drives, mobile and solid state storage devices to their stringent NSA/CSS SDDM 9-12 standard. It physically destroys hard drives by bending, breaking, and mangling the hard drive and its internal components including the data platters. Using a rugged, stainless steel crushing wedge, the PD-5 bends the data platters, preventing the hard drive from "spinning up" or the hard disk platters from being removed and placed on a spin stand used in a laboratory data recovering process. The PD-5 finishes the job by cracking the hard drive housing, breaking the PC board, and smashing the read-write heads.
